Final Persuasive Blog Post- Go To Chile!

Image
Chile is the longest country in the world, reaching over most of the western part of South America. There few countries that can match the full spectrum of different environments, spanning from vast cities to mountains to glaciers, that Chile claims. You won’t be able to experience the penguin-filled islands of southern Chile, or the beaches of north Chile from your couch. A television show cannot even begin to show the depth of Chile. It offers amazing opportunities for every one's interests. You need to visit Chile, and according to the U.S. Travel website, Santiago is one of the best places in South America to visit (Ethos). Chile has wonderful scenery that will feel like home to anybody. It is often called the safest country in South America, and I’m sure no one would want to visit a place where you could be hurt. Chile can take you on a trip to the past or even forward into the future. You can visit the wondrous old cathedrals, and homes, or take a trip to the cleverly na...

Traveling Home to North Carolina

The plane ride was rough. There was a lot of turbulence. We fi gured that this was because of how on this plane ride we were going over the ocean. All of us were bored of UNO, so we tried to come up with a new game. We played where one person had to start playing "rock, paper, scissors" with as many people around us as we could before we were turned down. None of us managed to make it past the three people mark. The plane ride was still turbulent, but we made the best of it. After we ran out of people around us to ask to play "rock, paper, scissors," we went back to staring out the window, playing on our phones, and whatever else we were doing before the made-up game. At about 10:15, we headed out to drive to PUQ airport (Presidente Carlos Ibanez del Campo International Airport) for our flight. We arrived at the airport with forty-five minutes until our flight, and stuck some good fortunes, because security and boarding went way smoother than it did on the w...

Cementerio Municipal and the Menèndez Family residence - History

Image
Today was our last day in Chile we were very excited. We were going to go to a very famous cemetery in Punta Arenas before we had to catch 20 hours of flights home. We decided that because it was last day we were going to treat ourselves to every meal. For breakfast Jake found a restaurant within walking distance of our hotel. It had great food and we really enjoyed everything we ordered. Once we had finished we walked back to our hotel stopping at shops on the way. Once we returned we packed our bags so we wouldn't have to worry about anything before we left. We went outside and walked over to Cementerio Municipal. We walked around for about an hour looking at the tombs. They had ones from small stones on the ground to massive ornate tombs that towered above us. We took pictures posing in front of the craziest colored and shaped graves. We even saw the graves of some famous Chilean figures including the Menèndez-Behety family and even Antonio Soto a famous Chilean labor rights ...

Ecosystem- Kayaking the Magellan Strait

Image
We woke up after a long sleep exhausted from the day before of hiking and being pecked at by penguins. We decided that instead of settling with the included hotel breakfast we would go to a restaurant called cafe 1900. It was lightly raining but that wasn't going to deter us so we suited up into our jackets and headed out. It was only a block down the street and we arrived quickly gladly greeted by the heated air. We were quickly seated and ordered 3 ‘pichangas’ for us to share. Our waiter brought us our food and we realized we had our work cut out for us. It was a mountain of fries covered in a cascade of foods including pork, chicken, eggs, olives and cheese. We spent over 30 minutes finishing off our meal and we paid and left. Seeing as our kayaking excursion was happening later in the day and we would need food we stopped by a popular supermarket called Unimarc. We spent about $80 on sandwich materials, soda, and chilean chips. We returned to our hotel and spent some time crea...

Penguin Tour/ Museo Nao Victoria- Ecosystem/ History

Image
Once we were done with the tour we decided to get some lunch at Café Tapiz, a nearby cafe. The food there was great and we decided we’d be going back soon. After lunch we decided we needed something else to do. Joey found us a nearby museum called Museo Nao Victoria, a museum about the great navigators of the past. They built a full size replica of the HMS beagle which was one of the most impressive things we’d ever seen. We got to go up on the ship and look around. Next we went to the Nao Victoria , a Magellan ship. It is amazing to think that these life size replicas were built so quickly. Compared to building a ship in the age of exploration, the replicas must’ve seemed swift. Once we landed on the island we started on the blocked off trail and the guide took us to a common penguin burrowing spot. Our guide explained the blocking off of the trail. Apparently, baby penguins, also known as chicks, when handled too much develop a stress response detrimental to their healt...

Travel Day/ Shipwreck of Lord Lonsdale- History

Image
We started off our day with a good breakfast from Restaurant Viva La Vida. Breakfast was simple, but it was decent. We ate what we would consider “normal” breakfasts- eggs, juice, and other foods you could find in America. Once we had finished our breakfast we returned to our hotel to watch Chilean television. After about an hour of brushing up on our Spanish we went to the road to hail a taxi. We were going to the airport today, this is because we had decided we wanted to see all of Chile, not only Santiago. We were in total agreeance when we decided that we would all definitely come back here in the future. The ride to the airport wasn’t very long in the taxis. Once we arrived at the airport, we did what we were used to, dropping off our bags at the arrival point while taking our carry ons with us. The only problem was that when we went through security, Russell caused the security machine to go off, which was a little frightening.  Russell was pulled aside, and the s...
